Prosthetics at The Beach
Kenney Orthopedics • Jun 10, 2022

Are you planning a beach vacation this year?

If so, and you’re an amputee with a prosthetic, there are unique challenges to consider before any beach vacation. Prosthetics at the beach are vulnerable to the heat, sand, and surf. Without proper precautions, prosthetics can be irreparably damaged and individuals experiencing limb loss can potentially spend their hard-earned vacation in a lot of pain. That’s why it’s important to be proactive before your beach vacation so that no matter what comes up, you can participate with comfort and ease. When in doubt, always ask your prosthetist for their opinions and advice.

Challenges of Prosthetics at the Beach

Heat

Issues related to heat can arise on a beach vacation before you even reach the sand. Heat can be the first obstacle for amputees on a beach vacation because heat can cause fit problems. High temperatures cause sweating and swelling, both of which affect fit. And we already know that if the fit is not perfect, then the result will be rubbing, chafing, and a generally uncomfortable and painful experience.

Sand

Once you’re on the beach, the sand can be a second obstacle because it can end up everywhere, including the sensitive junction between your residual limb and the prosthetic. This can cause painful irritation. It can also be problematic if the sand gets into mechanical components of a prosthetic. When wearing prosthetics at the beach, be prepared to deal with sand before it causes pain or serious damage to the device.

Water

What’s a beach vacation without the ocean? While the impulse to jump in may be strong, be aware of any potential hazards the water holds for individuals wearing prosthetics at the beach. Salt water can rust some types of prosthetics and damage the mechanical components. If you’re planning on fully submerging your prosthetic in the ocean (or even a pool at the hotel) be sure your prosthetic is up for the swim.

Getting Ready for a Beach Vacation with Prosthetics

Talk With Your Team

Always talk with your prosthetist and care team about your summertime plans, especially if they differ greatly from your normal routine. Make sure to wear prosthetics rated for use at the beach if you normally live and spend time elsewhere. Preparations and adjustments made before your trip can drastically increase your comfort during travel and your ability to participate in summertime activities with ease.

Have Accessories On-Hand

While on vacation, make sure you bring along everything you’ll need to stay comfortable. For a beach vacation you’ll want to have a few pairs of prosthetic socks and clean rags that you can use to keep your limb and prosthesis clean from sand, sweat and other summertime irritants.

Be Ready to Stop

While wearing prosthetics at the beach or anywhere, if you start to experience pinching, rubbing, or chafing, be prepared to stop. It’s far better to take time out of your vacation schedule to deal with issues that arise immediately, than to bear through and let those small issues snowball. So be sure in your planning that you give yourself time during and between activities to keep your prosthetic in tip-top, beach-ready shape.
