New Year’s Resolutions for Prosthetic Users
Kenney Orthopedics • January 7, 2023

The beginning of a new year gives us the opportunity to reflect on the year gone by and look forward to the year ahead. How do you celebrate the new year? Setting a resolution is an intentional way to set goals and improve your life in ways that are deeply personal and meaningful to you. And while everyone’s new year’s resolution will be unique to their circumstances, there are some general goals that many prosthetic users have in common for 2023.

1. Reaffirm Goals

The beginning of the new year is a great time to reaffirm your goals. Are you focused on mobility? Improving flexibility or balance? Building up strength? Identify your primary focus—set realistic short- and long-term goals to work toward throughout the year, and then find patient services that will support your goals.

2. Be Proactive in Self-Care

While your healthcare team and peers are important for care, support, and encouragement, much of the journey for prosthetic users is self-driven. This year, make sure that you focus your journey on your goals by being proactive in your healthcare: sign up for walking schools to stay at the top of your game when using your prosthetic device; and reach out immediately to your healthcare team if you have any pain or discomfort so that issues can be addressed quickly. You are your own best advocate, so this year resolve to be the best advocate you can be.

3. Ask for Help

It's not always easy to ask for help, but 2023 isn’t the year to struggle alone when there are so many resources available for prosthetic users. With a wide range of support groups and professionals ready to help, make a resolution this year to ask for help when you need it (we all need support every now and then). Peer support groups and peer mentor programs can be a great place for prosthetic users to ask for help and find support among peers who truly understand your challenges and can offer meaningful and useful help.

4. Celebrate Every Single Success

In 2023, we’re all about celebrating big and small successes. Throughout your prosthetic journey, not every day will be great, and that’s okay. Hard work is difficult and rewarding, and when you stop to observe and appreciate everything it took to get where you are today, you’ll see that there is so much to celebrate.

5. Take Time to Enjoy

After the chaos and stress of the past few years, this new year is all about appreciation: appreciation for loved ones and friends for being in our lives; and appreciation for the time we have to do the things we enjoy in life, whether that be our hobbies like quilting or biking, or spending time with friends and family. As you make resolutions for 2023, we encourage you to set goals that prioritize enjoying your life and having fun!
