Kenney Orthopedics • April 10, 2021

Kenney Orthopedics provides compassionate support and expert care for children and adults as they begin to navigate their orthotic or prosthetic journey. For the pediatric population with foot and ankle instability, we provide custom SMOs (Supramalleolar Orthoses) and AFOs (Ankle Foot Orthoses). These devices provide support for a child’s ankle and foot, helping to improve joint alignment, joint stability, balance, and walking. You may see a variety of characteristics in your child that may require an SMO or AFO including, but not limited to:

  • Pronation
  • Low muscle tone
  • Developmental or gross motor skill delay
  • Toe-walking
  • Multi-plane instability

At Kenney Orthopedics, our goal is to help your child feel confident and secure in their new orthosis. We achieve this goal by designing and customizing the orthosis to meet your child’s specific needs. There are many types of AFOs and many ways to customize each device including individualized trim lines, straps, colors, and patterns. The result is a highly functional and one-of-a-kind orthosis that your child will love!

During the initial evaluation, our skilled practitioners will guide you through the process of choosing the best AFO or SMO for your child. We will also provide practical guidance on daily care for your child’s new orthosis. For kids with complex presentations, we coordinate our orthosis approach to mirror the wishes of the entire healthcare team. This means that we actively work with you and your team of nurses, doctors, and therapists to ensure that your child achieves the best outcome. Our goal is to prepare your child for the future and empower them to thrive regardless of their circumstances.

Kenney Orthopedics has built a community of experts who work together to ensure that you and your child have access to the resources you need when you need them. For example, we offer a reading list of books for children who require an orthosis to help foster confidence and independence. We also have a patient advocate on staff who, along with your practitioner, will work hard to get your child what he or she needs to thrive.

With over 20 years of experience, Kenney Orthopedics is proud to provide our expertise to both children and adults at more than fifteen offices across Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina. To see our list of locations, visit https://www.kenneyorthopedics.com/locations
